Best, most hopeful, practical article I’ve read about police reform EVER. Thank you!!!

Thank you for this interview.

The police “fishing for crimes” is problematic on so many levels. Imagine a realtor or a taxi-driver or a contractor or a surgeon harassing you or tempting into an error of judgment, a mistake, and then punishing you for being fooled. This is called fraud.

When the police do it, it’s still fraud.

The police need to stop harassing the poor.

Guess what? This is our government’s exact same tactic for dealing with other nations. That’s why our media is full of negative stories about poor nations like Nicaragua and Iraq—and empty of stories about rich nations like Austria and New Zealand.

The minute we stop policing altogether is the minute things improve.

Awesome read. Last summer I was out on the streets with signs calling for police divestment in my city. After reading more about the arguments for more and different police training, I feel more strongly about that position instead.

An open question that I don't always see addressed from this side of the argument is related to data that comes out of police departments. A major criticism from the "defund the police" side is that police are the ones releasing the data about use of force, deaths during police interactions, etc. There's a suspicion that the data may not have integrity because of that. I would love to hear more about what Mr. Shrewsberry would say to that. Unfortunately, it's a lot easier for one side to call BS on the other -- now the burden of proof is on the police to prove that the data is legit, which is hard to do after the fact.

Great read. Thanks for this. Understanding the shortfalls of police training in the US has really helped me (a Canadian) understand what seems to be the vast differences in policing in our two countries.

What I love about this Tangle is it challenges what you think you know and brings forward ideas you have never heard before. Bravo!
