" I say fine: let’s embrace these reforms, and the model many European countries use more broadly. That would mean automatic voter registration for anyone over 18 and government-provided photo identification for voting-age people. "

I understand that Republicans are dishonest because they do not make obtaining voter ID easier and they make it harder to vote in other ways.

Still, I can understand their concern about voter fraud. For me (as a European) it seems that it is just much easier to cheat if you do not have to prove your identity when voting, and I think the average Republican voter feels the same way. This problem needs to be addressed, and the Democrats' 2014 proposal (when they actually cared about this issue) about Social Security cards seems to be the best because everyone possesses them.

1) It is hard to get if you lose or misplace it'. That's true, but I can confirm (as someone living in Europe) that it can be difficult to get a photo identification card if you lost it. Also, the current ways of identification (e.g. passport, ID, etc.) would still exist.

2) it can pose problems if someone misremembers the number or write it out in an illegible way. Please, do not place the bar so low. If you cannot copy 4 numbers, then why should you decide about the country's fate?
