I agree that the recall is a blunt and anachronistic political lever. However, as an Independent who lives in one of the few Republican strongholds of CA, I understand why they are pulling this lever.
The Democrats have governed CA and State and almost every County & City level for a generation. The outcome? CA ranks amongst the worst in every issue that matters to ordinary people. Wealth inequality. Income inequality. Health inequality. Crime. Homelessness. Infrastructure. It is almost out of water and it’s major electrical utility is bankrupt. Rural internet and cell access is poor or non-existent. And it has the worst debt despite being one of the richest places on the planet creatively and financially and with one of the highest tax levels. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Newsom is vulnerable or that the recall lever was pulled. What is surprising is why Republicans have manifestly failed to provide a compelling and engaging alternative option, and look like doing so again.
